Commentary on Acts 13:27

Theological / Devotional

They knew him not. See Acts 3:17. Paul implies he now preached to Gentiles and dispersed Jews because those who should have accepted salvation rejected it, though they would have been witnesses to others afar off (Eph. 2:17).

Voices of the prophets. Their writings preserving the messages originally proclaimed by their voices.

Read every sabbath. See v. 15. Paul appeals to Sabbath readings in synagogue service to witness to the suffering Messiah realized in Jesus. This contrasted with the kingly Messiah concept blocking Jewish acceptance.

Fulfilled them. Paul uses their Scriptures to convict Jews of sin in crucifying Christ, declaring they brought about the prophecies’ fulfillment. Compare Luke 24:26, 27, 32.
