Theological / Devotional

When the Jews were gone out. Textual evidence supports “as they were going out they besought,” implying Jews and proselytes asked for further instruction.

Words. Greek rhemata, “words,” extended to “discourse,” “declaration” (Acts 10:37). The people wanted a full statement of Christian doctrine.

The next sabbath. Greek eis to metaxu sabbaton, literally “in the midst of the sabbath” (midweek) or “the next sabbath.” Comparison with v. 44 indicates “the next sabbath” is better.
