Acts 13:44

Next sabbath. Greek to erchomeno sabbato, “on the coming sabbath” or “in the coming week.” The large public meeting and normal translation indicate the meeting was on a sabbath.

Almost the whole city. Gospel preaching was public, not secret or to few. Huge crowds heard, whole cities enlightened and admonished. The contrast between “almost the whole city” and “the Jews” (v. 45) suggests many Gentiles in the crowd.

The synagogue could not contain the crowd; listeners likely thronged doors and windows or gathered nearby, addressed from the entrance. Luke does not relate this discourse, likely similar to the previous week’s sermon.

The word of God. Emphasis on God’s message in vs. 44, 46, 48. Paul and Barnabas presented the gospel as God’s message.
