Theological / Devotional

The Jews. Contrasted with the large crowd containing many Gentiles (v. 44).

Envy. Greek zelos, “zeal,” here “jealousy.” Two factors: Jews were chagrined newcomers like Paul and Barnabas attracted Gentile interest; also, Gentiles were invited to the same religious privileges, abhorrent to Jews who felt exclusive as God’s children. They could accept some changes but not Gentiles made equal in God’s sight. This repudiation was unbearable.

Contradicting and blaspheming. Textual evidence supports omitting “contradicting.” Similar conduct occurred at Corinth (Acts 18:6).
