A lion. Heb. ’aryeh. Dead Sea scroll lQIs reads hr’h (ha’roeh), “the one seeing,” or “the seer.” The statement would then read, “The one seeing [that is, the “watchman” of v. 6] cried.” The reading of the Dead Sea scroll accords better with the context.
