Theological / Devotional

Took counsel. The Sanhedrin officially agreed to put Jesus to death. The remaining problem was how they could execute their plan without exciting a popular tumult. There had been earlier attempts on the life of Jesus (ch. 5:18; etc.), but the raising of Lazarus had brought the issue to a crisis. Caiaphas’ suggestion of a way out without necessarily establishing the guilt or innocence of Jesus (see on v. 50) seemed to be the solution the members of the council were looking for.
