Theological / Devotional

Little children. Gr. teknia. This term of endearment occurs only here in the Gospel of John, but it is frequent in 1 John (chs. 2:1, 12, 28; 3:7, 18; 4:4; 5:21). A similar expression (“my children”) was common in the mouths of Jewish teachers when addressing their pupils (see Talmud Ta’anith 21a, Soncino ed., p. 104; Baba Bathra 60b, Soncino ed., p. 245; etc.).
