Theological / Devotional

Heart shall rejoice. This is the application Jesus makes of the figure introduced in v. 21. It is therefore stretching the figure too far to see in the travail of the woman the birth pains of a new order of the kingdom. The disciples’ rejoicing came on the day of the resurrection.

No man. Gr. oudeis, “no one,” the devil and his agents included. The disciples’ joy would be complete and permanent in spiritual fellowship with the risen Lord, who would be with them “always, even unto the end of the world” (Matt. 28:20).
