Theological / Devotional

Broken my teeth. The figure of food is continued from v. 15. Not only must Judah be sated with the bitterest of drinks, but also her food is filled with gravel. Jewish tradition in the Midrash states that while en route to exile in Babylon, the Jews had to bake their bread in pits, and thus it became mixed with grit.

Ashes. A common symbol of mourning (see 2 Sam. 13:19; Job 2:8).
