Charged them straitly. That is, He gave them strict orders (cf. ch. 1:43). Why Jesus enjoined silence on the parents is not entirely clear. The charge was, however, in harmony with Christ’s repeated attempts, at this stage of His ministry, to avoid undue publicity (see on Mark 1:43, 44; cf. Matt. 8:4 ; 9:30).

Given her to eat. A tender evidence of the thoughtful care manifested by Jesus. This command implies, also, that the girl had been suffering from a disease that drained her physical strength. Possibly she had not been able to eat for some days.
