Theological / Devotional

The east gate. Probably a Temple gate in the eastern wall, identified by some with the Horse Gate of v. 28. Shemaiah is mentioned as keeper of the east gate and not as repairer of it. It is therefore possible that the gate was intact and needed no repair. Where he worked is not indicated. He was probably one of the priests (see Neh. 12:6).

Hananiah. Perhaps the priest who took part in the dedication of the wall (Neh. 12:41).

Meshullam. See on v. 4.
