Theological / Devotional

All these cities. That is, the cities of the Amorites mentioned in vs. 25 to 30.

Heshbon. The royal city, the dwelling place of the king and the seat of his government. The mound Tell Hesban, 18 mi. east of the Jordan across from Jericho, preserves the ancient name.

All the villages. Literally, “all her daughters,” referring to the city of Heshbon as the metropolis, or mother city, and to the villages as her offspring, dependent upon her for their economic and social health.
